Program DescriptionA collaboration between the Maine Family Literacy Task Force, "Born to Read, Books for Babies, Bell Atlantic, Even Start, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, the Center for Inquiry on Literacy" (press release), Maine Public Broadcasting and Verizon Wireless, the Read with ME program strives to raise children's and parents' literacy by providing young children with home reading materials.

COMPONENT INFORMATION
Curriculum Component
  • Each child receives a bag containing three books by Maine authors, a bookmark offering parents reading tips, a proposed reading list, along with other resources.

Parental Component
  • The initiative encourages parents to read with their children on a daily basis.

Teacher Component
  • Participating schools receive a video from Maine Public Broadcasting modeling proven methods of reading with children.
