| TX | Passed 11/2000 | P-12 | The TEXAS State Board of Educator Certification has approved a new transitional license that will allow "educated people to become teachers by drawing on their life experience" rather than just college credit hours. The board is hoping to attract professionals wishing to change careers. The rule requires teachers on these transitional permits to be mentored by experienced teachers with "demonstrated excellence" and to enroll in an educator preparation program within 180 days. Candidates also must pass tests demonstrating proficiency in the subject they are teaching within one year, and in teaching competency and knowledge of students within three years.
