LASigned into law 06/2008P-12Provides that a child whose parent is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or the National Guard and such parent has been called to duty for or is on leave from overseas deployment shall be granted up to five excused absences from school per school year for the child to visit with his or her parent. GAVetoed 05/2008P-12Adds Georgia as a member of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Includes provisions related to unofficial and official records and transcripts, immunizations, kindergarten and first grade entrance age, course placement and placement in special services such as gifted and talented and special education, absences related to deployment activities, high school graduation requirements and exit exams, and transfers during the student's senior year.

Provides for state coordination, the creation of the Interstate Commission on Educational Opportunity for Military Children by member states, and the interstate commission's powers and duties, organization and operation, rulemaking functions, oversight, enforcement and dispute resolution, and financing.

WASigned into law 03/2008P-12The office of the superintendent of public instruction (OSPI) is directed to convene and support a task force to review and make recommendations regarding the interstate compact on educational opportunity for military children. Support is to be provided to the (four) legislative members of the task force from the committee staff of the senate and house. The task force must issue a report, at minimum, on the components of the compact that are currently implemented or not implemented, the interplay between the compact and federal and state law and the legal obligations the compact would impose on the state if adopted.

WVSigned into law 03/2008P-12Creates the West Virginia remembers program to provide a forum for public school children to learn about "military service, patriotism and courage" from veterans.
