| Governor Bob Riley's State of the State Address
Finance
Increase education funding by more than $390 million and fully fund request made by the State Board of Education.
STEM
Increase the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Intiative (AMSTI) from $22 million to $33 million and implement the program in 614 schools serving 304,000 students by the end of 2008.
Reading/Literacy
Increase funding for the Alabama Reading Initiative to expand into all grades to cover 910 schools.
Distance Learning
Expand the ACCESS distance learning program, which is already in 44 schools, to add an additional 26 high schools to offer access to courses including, AP, foreign language and advanced math and science. Another 150 high schools will recieve ACCESS technology if the budget passes and implementation of distance learning labs in all high schools by 2010.
Teaching Quality -- Induction/Mentoring
Pair first- and second- year teachers with trained mentors.
Teaching Quality -- Teacher Compensation
Give teachers a 7% pay raise and implement a pilot program for performance bonuses.
Facilities
Propose a school construction intiative of $850 million, with funds to be distributed to every system based on school enrollment.
Adult Learning/Continuing Education
Create a "Back to School" Tax Credit to encourage adult workers to go back to school and receive job training in high growth, high demand and high paying jobs. |  |
