AlaskaGovernor Sean Parnell's State of the State Address

PROPOSALS

Accountability - School Improvement
-- Focus on the low-performing schools that need the most help.

Assessments
-- Eliminate the TerraNova assessment, while leaving standards-based assessments in place.

High School - Graduation Rates
-- Raise graduation rate to 90% by 2020.

Online Learning
-- Offer more digital learning opportunities. Partner with school districts and the Association of Alaska School Boards on the Alaska 1-to-1 Digital Learning Initiative.

Reading/Literacy
-- Improve reading instruction for kindergarten through third grade.

School Safety
-- Continue working with local districts to improve school safety and security for Alaska's children.

Teacher Evaluation
-- Evaluate teachers based on student learning.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Standards
-- Raised content standards.

Postsecondary - Financial Aid
-- Awarded Alaska Performance Scholarships to more than 4,600 young people.
-- Fully funded performance Alaska Performance Scholarships.

IllinoisGovernor Pat Quinn's State of the State Address

PROPOSALS

School Safety
-- Pass legislation that will require every school in the state to practice active safety drills that will prepare them for even the worst.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Accountability
-- Improved school report cards.

Economic/Workforce Development
-- Trained thousands of workers for jobs in high-demand industries like healthcare, manufacturing and construction.

Postsecondary Access - Immigrant Students
-- Created the Illinois Dream Commission for awarding scholarships to high school graduates from immigrant families.

Military
-- Signed an Executive Order that directs our licensing agencies to assess military training for state license requirements. Last month, the Board of Nursing approving a suggested "bridge" curriculum for military medics to obtain LPN licenses.

P-3
-- Invested $45 million to build early childhood education centers in high-need communities across Illinois, including in Carpentersville, Dolton, and Cahokia.

School Safety
-- Convened a School Safety Summit with education, public safety, mental health and law enforcement leaders to identify better ways to protect our schools.

Teacher Evaluations/Tenure
-- Set clear benchmarks for teacher evaluation and put performance above tenure.

New YorkGovernor Andrew M. Cuomo's State of the State Address

PROPOSALS

State Policymaking-Commission/Teacher Evaluations/Accountability Systems
-- Appoint a bipartisan education commission to work with the legislature to recommend reforms for a meaningful teacher evaluation system and a school accountability system.

Postsecondary - Grant Funding
-- Expand NYSUNY2020 to the remaining 60 campuses, offering challenge grants to research centers for plans to connect academic excellence and economic development.

Workforce Development
-- Create the Office for New Americans to assist legal permanent residents, providing adult education and job training.

Civic Education
-- Implement the New New York Leaders Initiative to create opportunities for the state's next generation to dedicate their careers to public service.
- Student Intern Program - brings students into state government
- Empire State Fellows Program - full-time leadership training program that will prepare next generation professionals who are members of underrepresented groups for careers as New York State policymakers.

South CarolinaGovernor Nikki Haley's State of the State Address

PROPOSALS

Finance
-- Start a conversation about the way we fund K through twelve schools in South Carolina. 

State Policymaking
-- Give voters the opportunity at the ballot box to make the constitutional change to allow governors to appoint the Superintendent of Education. 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Charter Schools
-- Reaffirmed our commitment to charter schools.

Alternative Teacher Certification
-- Invested in innovation with a focus on both rural and urban areas through programs like Teach For America.

Teacher Evaluation
-- Gained more flexibility to manage and evaluate our schools and educators

UtahGovernor Gary R. Herbert's State of the State Address

PROPOSALS

Finance
-- Continue to fully invest in the growing schools

STEM
-- Invest $20 million for STEM education. Eight state institutions of higher learning are reprioritizing their budgets to match that funding dollar for dollar.

Technology
-- Continue to provide our students critical tools like computer adaptive testing and other technologies, across all grade levels and socioeconomic strata.

Teacher Evaluations/Performance Pay
-- Support continued implementation of teacher evaluation and performance pay.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

At-risk Students - Individual Instruction
-- Invested millions in enhanced individualized instruction and help for at-risk children.

Finance
-- Increased per pupil spending.

Postsecondary Finance
-- Invested millions more in higher education, including applied technology colleges.

Student Achievement
-- National average Advanced Placement test score is 2.84. Utah's is 3.1. More than 27,000 students prepare for college through concurrent enrollment, and compared to other states with a high percentage of students taking the ACT, Utah ranks second in test scores.

Teacher Benefits
-- Covered the increased cost of healthcare for teachers.
