Survey of State Approaches to Suicide Prevention in Schools PDF - Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth in the United States according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Most states, however, have not been aggressive in enacting school specific suicide legislation. This paper briefly identifies the main policy approaches utilized by states. It then offers examples of some of the more rigorous state approaches, programs developed by nonprofits, and approaches evaluated as successful through research and practice. This survey will be helpful to anyone looking to be more aggressive at youth suicide prevention in schools. (Christopher Leahy, ECS, April 2012)...
