Home Front Alert: The Risks Facing Young Children in Military Families - The United States has been in war zones more than 12 years, deeply affecting soldiers' families. Two million children under the age of 18 have a deployed parent or two; nearly 500,000 are between birth and five years. This brief, adapted from scientific literature, finds reunions can be problematic, young children's well-being mirrors that of their caregivers so supporting children means supporting non-deployed parents, National Guard or Reserves members are comparatively underserved, lacking supports available to their on-base peers. Learning how to help these families will no doubt give insight into helping other fragile families. (David Murphey, Child Trends, July 2013)...
