Growing Number of Dads Home with the Kids: Biggest Increase among Those Caring for Family - More fathers than ever are staying home with their children, up to 2 million in 2012. While the Great Recession contributed to increases because of unemployment, other reasons include childcare and illness or disability. Stay-at-home fathers are less well-off financially and have lower educational attainment than their working counterparts. They also tend to be older than stay-at-home mothers.
