Document Number: 4132 State Education Spending Taking Hit from National Economic MS Word - State budgets are reflecting their weakest two-year growth rates since the recession of the early 1980s. Many states may have to cut education funding to close projected budget gaps. However, there is some good news: in a survey of its 16 member states, the Southern Regional Education Board found the 14 states that have passed their budgets project increased spending for K-12 education. Eleven states project increases of less than 3%, and three (Maryland, Mississippi and West Virginia) expect increases of greater than 5%.
