Document Number: 5104 Class Size: Counting Students Can Count - This brief summarizes the research on the effects of class size reduction initiatives on student achievement, focusing on the research surrounding Tennessee’s Student/Teacher Achievement Ratio (STAR) and Wisconsin’s Student Achievement Guarantee in Education (SAGE) programs. The research suggests that the modified student and teacher behavior that smaller class size brings about is the factor that results in greater student achievement, but that class sizes must be significantly diminished in order for these benefits to be realized. The brief also examines the costs and methods of financing class size reduction initiatives. Recommendations for state policymakers are also provided.
