The Sound of Silence: The Unprecedented Decline of Music Education in California Public Schools: A Statistical Review - Fewer California students are participating in music courses and activities, according to "The Sound of Silence." The report documents the impact of budget cuts, high-stakes testing and the implementation of No Child Left Behind on actual student participation in music education programs. For instance, while total student population increased by 5.8%, then percentage of all California students involved in music education courses declined by 50%. The number of music teachers declined by 28%. The authors offer recommendations for state leaders, including to examine the cause for the decline in music education participation, and present their own solutions.
