Document Number: 5798 Preparing Indigenous Teachers for Alaska Schools (PITAS) - PITAS is designed to prepare Alaska Native students to become teachers in the Alaska Native community and to increase the overall number of Alaska Native teachers. PITAS participants are identified in high school and paired with a mentor, who is to meet with the student throughout the year prior to college entrance and assist with study skills. Students participate in online writing courses and apply for scholarships and admission at the University of Alaska Southeast. Students accepted into the PITAS program are provided with tuition, books, lodging, academic counseling and tutoring in math and language arts if needed....
