In the 2001-02 school year, there were 17,140 public school districts in the United States. The 100 largest, representing less than 1% of all school districts in the nation, were responsible for the education of 23% of all public school students, and were located in 33 states, with Texas having the most with 15, followed by California and Florida each with 13.
