Document Number: 6291 The Alternative Pathways Project: A Framework for Dropout Reduction and Recovery - This report explains the elements essential to alternative pathways that ready all students for college and the workplace. The authors propose two prerequisites for such a system – balanced school reform and early intervention strategies – as well as six system components: (1) shared responsibility and systemic coordination; (2) adequate supply of choice-based, high-quality alternatives; (3) ability to refer, transition and re-enroll; (4) guidance and advocacy; (5) flexible demonstrations of proficiency; and (6) policy incentives. An assessment tool allows users to evaluate whether their school possesses the defined prerequisites and is in the early, growth or advanced stages of addressing each of the six system components.
