In the 2002-03 school year, there were 17,402 public school districts in the United States. The 100 largest, representing less than 0.6% of all school districts in the nation, were responsible for the education of 23% of all public school students, and were located in 33 states, although 40% were located in three states, California, Texas and Florida.
