Progress in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate in SREB States - This five-page report provides a snapshot of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test-taking and scores in the 16 Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) states. The percent of students taking at least one AP exam rose in all SREB states and the U.S. as a whole from 2000 to 2005, as did the percent of students scoring a 3 or higher on an exam. However, despite the overall gains in AP participation, African American students are still underrepresented in AP programs in all SREB states. According to the report, the number of schools offering the IB program has grown both in SREB states and nationwide. SREB states house nearly half the programs in the U.S. in SREB states and serve more than half of the IB students in the nation. The author likewise proposes state policies likely to improve AP and IB participation and success. (Rebecca Daugherty Kaye, SREB, May 2006) ...
