A Closer Look at Charter Schools Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling - This report finds that after adjusting for student demographic characteristics, charter school mean scores in reading and math were lower on average than those for traditional public schools. The report also finds that in reading and math, average performance differences between traditional public schools and charters affiliated with a district were not statistically significant, while charters not affiliated with a district scored significantly lower on average than traditional schools. Also available is an executive summary. (Henry Braun, Frank Jenkins and Wendy Grigg, National Center for Education Statistics, August 2006) ...
