Document Number: 7089 Education at a Glance 2006 - This report provides a rich, comparable and up-to-date collection of indicators on the performance of education systems in the 30 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries along with indicators for a number of partner countries from throughout the world. Key findings: (1) educational attainment is rising across the OECD area; (2) differences in student performance at age 15 are characterized by wide variations in the number performing below international norms; (3) investment in education brings high social and private returns, with completion of upper secondary education bringing a particularly large payback for individuals; (4) demographic change will have significant implications for resourcing education in some countries; (5) trends in spending on education vary by sector, as well as by country; (6) private funding is slowly becoming more important, mainly in tertiary education, but public support remains strong; (7) education extends well beyond compulsory schooling for most people, with a majority now taking part in tertiary education; and (8) different countries make very different choices in allocating resources to school instruction.
