Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices - Reports from the 2007 NAEP 8th grade reading tests reveal that 69% of 8th grade students fall below the proficient level in reading comprehension and 26% of students read below the basic level. The time has come to consider seriously the support that needs to be given to struggling readers and the role that every teacher needs to play in working toward higher levels of literacy among all adolescents, regardless of their reading abilities.
