The Worst of Times: Children in Extreme Poverty in the South and Nation - This report analyzes the latest census data on children in extreme poverty. It finds that in 2008, more than 5.7 million children in the U.S. lived in extreme poverty (in a household with an income below 50% of the federal poverty line), and 2.4 million of those children (42% of all children in extreme poverty) lived in the South.
