The State of Leadership: Public School Principals in Illinois - Despite the recent attention at the national level brought about by components in the Race to the Top, research on principals has lagged behind teacher's research. The authors assembled data on Illinois principals from 2001-2008 and analyzed patterns in the distribution of principals in three sections: demographics, experience and academic background. "Demographics" revealed more racially diverse and the proportion of female principals doubled between 1990 and 2009. "Experience" revealed the state's principals are younger and less experienced except in disadvantaged schools. "Academic background" showed that high school principals tend to have stronger background than elementary and middle school and principals in the most disadvantaged schools typically have weaker academic backgrounds than those in more affluent schools.
