A Second Year in Head Start: Characteristics of Children Who Entered the Program at Age Three - This study of Head Start participants found that among children who enrolled in the program in fall 2006 and stayed for two years, the second year was associated with additional gains in vocabulary and early reading, writing and math skills as well as in their social-emotional development. However, even with such progress, about 20 percent of these children were identified as having a learning disability by the end of their two-year Head Start experience and more than one-third were overweight or obese.
