Document Number: 9865School Readiness in Hawaii - This report expands the definition of school readiness to include the child, his or her family, the early education setting, the school, and the community. It stresses the importance of improving the structure of early childhood programs, with respect to factors such as teacher education and class size, and the process employed by these programs, such as fostering adult-child relationships and using supportive and appropriate learning experiences. The report also recommends expanding access to quality early education programs for all families, with priority for those in greatest need, and providing retention and intervention programs to the most vulnerable children and families.
