The Progress of Education Reform: Funding Dual Credit Programs PDF - More than 87% of America's public high schools offer their students the opportunity to gain college credit prior to graduation. Learning opportunities that allow students to gain college-level credit often are referred to as "dual credit" programs, and they are experiencing a growth in both the number of students who take advantage of them and the number of schools that offer them. The College Ladder: Linking Secondary and Postsecondary Education for Success for All Students - This report reviews 22 programs that provide opportunities for high school students to earn college-level credit or take college-level courses to determine their impact on a range of student outcomes, including credits earned during high school, performance on high school tests, high school graduation rates, college-going rates, college remediation, college grades, retention in college and degree and job market attainment. An emphasis is placed on programs that traditionally serve high-achieving students, as well as those that serve first generation, low-income and low-performing students and underrepresented minorities. Although the research is limited, outcomes generally are positive, indicating that students who participate in these programs receive some benefit and may find a Secondary-Postsecondary Learning Option a good alternative to their regular high school experience. The College Ladder also describes various characteristics of effective programs, and analyzes issues of credit transferability, funding for these school-college partnerships and equitable access to programs. Add and Subtract: Dual Enrollment as a State Strategy To Increase Postsecondary Success for Underrepresented Students - This report examines the rationale for dual enrollment programs, data on dual enrollment participation in Florida, Utah, City University of New York (CUNY), Washington State, Illinois and Virginia, and essential questions to ask when evaluating any such program, as well as recommended answers to those questions. Case studies of the dual enrollment programs in Florida, Utah and CUNY are provided. Page 16 presents a state funding model for dual enrollment. According to the report, concurrent courses are offered in every high school, middle school and state college in Utah. Dual Credit and Exam-Based Courses in U.S. Public High Schools: 2002-03 - This and its companion piece Dual Enrollment of High School Students at Postsecondary Institutions: 2002-03 are the first national reports on the characteristics of dual-credit courses. The findings address the (1) prevalence of dual credit, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) course offerings in U.S. public high schools; (2) location and educational focus of dual-credit courses; (3) characteristics of courses for dual credit (course sequence, course instructors, student composition); and (4) eligibility requirements for enrolling in dual-credit courses. Statistics are disaggregated by school size, urbanicity, geographic region and percent minority enrollment. According to the report, over six in 10 schools offering dual-credit courses set eligibility requirements for students to enroll in such courses; in 42% of such schools, one requirement was teacher recommendation. Dual Enrollment of High School Students at Postsecondary Institutions: 2002-03 - This report, a companion piece to Dual Credit and Exam-Based Courses in U.S. Public High Schools: 2002-03, provides data from a nationally representative survey of postsecondary institutions on the topic of dual enrollment of high school students. The findings address the (1) Prevalence of and enrollment in dual enrollment programs and college-level courses outside of dual enrollment programs; (2) Characteristics of dual enrollment programs and courses, such as location, instructors, curriculum, eligibility requirements, credit earned and funding; and (3) Dual enrollment programs specifically geared toward students at risk of academic failure. Findings are disaggregated by institution size and type (public 2-year, public or private 4-year). One finding: 5% of institutions with dual enrollment programs or 2% of all institutions had dual enrollment programs geared toward high school students at risk of academic failure. Dual Credit: A Report of Progress and Policies That Offer High School Students College Credits MS Word - This paper provides a brief overview of a study, supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts, of programs through which high school students acquire dual credits for high school and college. The report presents findings and analyses of benefits and problems of dual credit, implications for various stakeholders and recommendations for action. In particular, the authors stress the need for better evaluation of dual-credit initiatives, as well as experimentation with new models of P-16 education that incorporate dual-credit programs.
