Improving Post-High School Outcomes for Transition-Age Students with Disabilities: An Evidence Review - Hoping to address the gap in post-high school outcomes that persists between students with disabilities and those without, researchers embarked on literature review using the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) systematic review procedures. Looking for strategies designed to help students with disabilities transition to employment, postsecondary education, or independent living, they found only 43 eligible studies; of those, 16 met the WWC standards. They concluded there was little support from high-quality intervention research for identifying a range of programs to help students make successful transitions. (R. Improving College and Career Readiness for Students with Disabilities - While high school and college-going rates for disabled students have improved, more could be done. Researchers recommend states encourage schools to raise expectations, increase information concerning postsecondary and career options, increase the availability of knowledgeable counselors, ensure all students are served by well-trained teachers prepared to support individual needs, help district and school staff to better use data to inform instruction and provide multiple pathways to success after high school. Students with Disabilities: Better Federal Coordination Could Lessen Challenges in the Transition from High School - This report provides information regarding the transition for students with disabilities out of high school to postsecondary education or the workforce. The authors examine: (1) challenges students with disabilities may face accessing federally funded transition services; and (2) the extent to which federal agencies coordinate their transition activities. To improve the provision of transition services for students with disabilities, GAO recommends that Education, HHS, Labor, and SSA develop an interagency transition strategy that addresses: (1) operating toward common outcome goals for transitioning youth; (2) increasing awareness of available transition services; and (3) assessing the effectiveness of their coordination efforts. Post-High School Outcomes of Youth With Disabilities Up to Four Years After High School: A Report From The National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 - This report focuses on youth with disabilities who were out of secondary school. Youth included varied in the length of time they were out of high school, ranging from less than a month to four years post-high school and describes the experiences of youth with disabilities in postsecondary education, employment, residential independence, social and community involvement in their first four years out of high school.
