2011 SREB Fact Book on Higher Education - The annual Fact Book on Higher Education provides comparative data and trends for Southern regional colleges and universities in a national context. Selected findings include: educating the increasingly diverse population to ever higher levels; college enrollment trends are promising, but alarming gaps remain; higher education is still the best bet for higher pay; college graduation rates in the region are below U.S. averages, but more students are sticking to their studies; women and minorities lead growth in degrees; affordability gap grows for middle- and lower-income students; and a collision is coming between demographic trends and college affordability. Quality Counts 2005: No Small Change: Targeting Money Toward Student Performance - In 2005, Education Week’s annual report on the state of public education examines state funding for public education. Articles address school finance lawsuits and equity, linking spending and academic achievement, student-based funding systems, teacher performance pay, charter school finance, adequacy/core cost, 50-state school finance snapshots and more. The “State of the States” section gives a letter grade to each of the 50 states based on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results as well as indicators in four areas: standards and accountability, efforts to improve teacher quality, school climate and equitable distribution of resources. 120 Years of American Education: A Statistical Portrait - This report contains a wealth of annual statistics from the U.S. Department of Education from 1869 through 1992. Tables and figures include general demographic information going back to 1790, enrollment and achievement by gender, age and racial group, state and federal spending on education programs and a variety of other useful data. The report is separated into three parts: Education Characteristics of the Population, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Higher Education. (Thomas D. Kids Count 2008 Data Book Online - Kids Count is a national and state-by-state effort to track the status of children in the United States. This Web site allows users to generate custom graphs, maps, ranked lists and state-by-state profiles; or download the entire 2008 Kids Count data set as delimited text files. Public School Student, Staff and Graduate Counts by State: School Year 2001-02 - This report provides 50-state information on the number of (1) pre-K-12 students enrolled by grade; (2) teachers by level of instruction; (3) school staff (including instructional aides, instructional coordinators and supervisors, guidance counselors, librarians, student/other support staff, school administrators, school district administrators and administrative support staff) by category; (4) public school students enrolled, disaggregated by race; (5) public high school completers for 2000-01 (disaggregated for diploma recipients, other high school completers and GED recipients, and by race). Federal, State, and Local Governments: 2002 Public Elementary-Secondary Education Finance Data - These statistical tables contain data on education spending based on the 2002 Census of Governments. The tabulations present data on revenue, expenditure, debt and assets for all individual public elementary and secondary school systems. The data show that state governments contributed the greatest share of public elementary and secondary school funding -- $207.4 billion -- followed by local sources at $179.7 billion. The federal government was the third largest contributor at $32.7 billion. The District of Columbia spent the most in per-student expenditures followed by New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The lowest per-pupil spending amounts were in Utah, Mississippi, Arizona, Idaho and Tennessee. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004)...

Schools and Staffing Survey, 1999-2000: Overview of the Data for Public, Private, Public Charter, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Elementary and Secondary Schools - This report from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) provides information on the current condition of U.S. schools. The survey is based on interviews conducted with more than 70,000 principals, teachers and school librarians.
