Here are some key questions for policymakers to consider with regard to the compensation of school and district leaders:

  • Are leaders being paid enough for the time and effort they put into the job?
  • To what extent are compensation issues a factor in the leadership shortage in your state?
  • How do average salaries in your state compare with other similar states?
  • How can incentives, performance pay and differentiated pay be used to increase the leadership candidate pool and retain current leaders?
