Knowledge Management in Education: Defining the Landscape - Given the current emphasis on school accountability and improved performance, educators need a structure for gathering and sharing data – a structure best provided by knowledge management systems, say the authors of this report. Listing the information-sharing obstacles that often plague schools, Petrides and Nodine present a "data-information-knowledge" continuum as a potential solution, as well as examples of how K-12 and postsecondary institutions can apply such a continuum to perform specific functions. (Lisa A. Petrides and Thad R. Nodine, The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education, March 2003)...

The Promise of Baldrige for K-12 Education - Although not without controversy, efforts focused on improving quality processes based upon the Malcolm Baldrige Education Criteria for Performance Excellence may hold promise for fundamentally improving K–12 education. The Baldrige criteria address many issues other failed educational efforts have not—including leadership, systems thinking, changes in school culture, and data-driven decision making. This ACT policy report examines the information available on improving school quality through implementation of the Baldrige criteria. It is intended to provide useful information about the current state of Baldrige applications and to make specific recommendations regarding potential Baldrige K–12 implementation, evaluation, and research. (MaryBeth Walpole and Richard J. Noeth, ACT, 2002)...

Dancing with the Bear: Real-Life Adventures in Transforming Education - This report captures the experiences of and lessons learned from six state leadership teams that used the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence to focus and align their education improvement efforts. The Baldrige Criteria are based on seven management categories aligned to help organizations document, achieve and sustain high performance. (Peggy Siegel, Baldrige in Education Initiative, APQC, National Alliance of Business, 2002)...

Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award MS Word - The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the nation's premier award for performance excellence and quality achievement. The Education Category won for the first time in the history of the Baldrige Awards. Within the category, awards were given to two school districts and a university: Chugach School District, Anchorage, Alaska; Pearl River School District, Pearl River, New York; and the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin. This report provides information about and links to the award winners....

Monitoring What Matters MS Word - All states struggle with how best to monitor the various data on student performance, progress and participation. Some states are further along in this process than others, as this article illustrates. In addition to deciding what to monitor, policymakers have to determine how to collect and analyze education data. Ideally, states will align the tracking process with their major priorities and goals in education. (Kathy Christie, Stateline, Phi Delta Kappan, September 2000, reprinted with permission)...
