School Choice - See the Institute for Education Sciences' What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) for recommendations on school choice. The WWC reviews the research on the different programs, products, practices, and policies in education. Then, by focusing on the results from high-quality research, they try to answer the question “What works in education?” The goal is to provide educators with the information they need to make evidence-based decisions. (WWC, September 2013)...

WWC Review of the Report "The Effects of School Vouchers on College Enrollment: Experimental Evidence from New York City" - WWC reviews a study on whether private school vouchers to public school students from low-income families affected their later rates of college enrollment. While the study found no impact on college enrollment rates in general, there was a positive and statistically significant influence for African American students. WWC said the study was a "well-implemented randomized controlled trial." (WWC, May 2013)...

The Effects of School Vouchers on College Enrollment: Experimental Evidence from New York City - In the first study, using a randomized experiment to measure the impact of school vouchers on college enrollment, Matthew Chingos and Paul Peterson, professor of government at Harvard University, examine the college-going behavior through 2011 of students who participated in a voucher experiment as elementary school students in the late 1990s. They find no overall impacts on college enrollment but do find large, statistically significant positive impacts on the college going of African-American students who participated in the study. (Brown Center on Education Policy at Brookings, August 2012)...

A Failed Experiment: Georgia's Tax Credit Scholarship for Private Schools - Georgia is currently one of seven states with tax credit scholarship legislation, yet it stands out--according to the report--as an exception among those states as the least accountable and the least effective in serving any public purpose. (Southern Education Foundation, 2011)...

WWC Quick Review: Evaluation of the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program Final Report - This quick review examines a study on whether winning a lottery for scholarships to attend private schools affects reading and math achievement levels and graduation rates for K–12 low-income students. The study found little statistically significant effects on reading and math achievement. However, students who won the scholarship lottery were significantly more likely to graduate from high school. Winning the lottery did not have a statistically significant effect on reading.
