The Arts: A Driving Force in Minnesota's Economy - Building on a national model and a broader statewide effort, this study measured the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry in Minnesota. The study found that these industries generate $838.5 million in local economic activity. This spending — $485.8 million by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and an additional $352.7 million in event-related spending by their audiences — supports 22,095 full-time jobs, generates $631.1 million in household income to local residents, and delivers $94.1 million in local and state government revenue. More than 14.5 million people attended nonprofit arts and culture events during 2004 and spent a total of $352.7 million, not including the cost of admission. Eighty-eight percent of the attendees were local and 12% were nonlocal. Non-local attendees spent an average of 108% more than locals ($44.82 vs. $21.57), which included costs for lodging, meals, retail and transportation. The report concluded that these data demonstrate the positive impact of cultural tourists on local economies. (Minnesota Citizens for the Arts, March 2006)...
