From the ECS State Policy Database: Curriculum--Mathematics - This policy database—updated weekly—is made possible by your state's fiscal support of the Education Commission of the States....

50-State Mathematics Requirements for the Standard High School Diploma PDF - Math graduation requirements: This report specifies the high school graduation requirements in math in the 50 states. It notes two growing trends in state-set math graduation requirements – the ever-larger number of states requiring four units of math to graduate, and the small but growing number of states specifying that a math course must be taken each year of high school or in the student's senior year. (Jennifer Dounay Zinth, Education Commission of the States, March 2012)...

High School-Level STEM Initiatives - This database provides information on a variety of state efforts intended to increase student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in grades 9-12. (Kyle Zinth, Education Commission of the States, June 2008)...

Gearing Up to Teach the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in the Rural Northeast Region - Interviews and a survey indicate that many rural educators have access to professional development and networking opportunities designed to help them implement the Common Core math standards, but they need time to review the standards and plan instruction. They also need additional training to implement the math standards effectively and they need access to quality resources and materials. (Kirk Walters, et al., REL Northeast & Islands, December 2014)...

Using Assessment Data to Guide Math Course Placement of California Middle School Students - Taking some of the guesswork out of identifying which 8th graders would succeed in Algebra I, researchers found the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project's Grade 7 test is a good predictor. It has a 77 percent success rate and results are available immediately whereas the Grade 7 California Standards Test results aren't available until the next school year. (Chun-Wei Huang, Jason Snipes and Neal Finkelstein, REL West, September 2014)...

An Evaluation of Number Rockets: A Tier-2 Intervention for Grade 1 Students at Risk for Difficulties in Mathematics - US students lag behind students in other industrialized nations in mathematics. In the Southwest Region, specifically, several states rank very low in mathematics performance. Response to Intervention (RTI) instruction models have been increasingly popular as a way to intervene as soon as students are identified as at risk. The current study is an effectiveness evaluation of the Fuchs et al. (2005) study of a small group tutoring intervention in mathematics for at risk students in grade 1 that demonstrated its effectiveness across several schools in a single district. (National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance, Feb 2012)...

Kentucky Early Mathematics Testing Program (KEMTP) - KEMTP helps high school sophomores and juniors understand how their math knowledge compares to college standards. Goals are to encourage students to take more math courses and reduce the need for remediation in college. (Link to legislation here.)...
