Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary Education: School Year 2002-03 - Approximately $440 billion in revenue was raised to fund public education for grades pre-kindergarten through 12th in the 2002-03 school year. This report presents data for public elementary and secondary schools on: (1) revenues; (2) percentage distribution of revenue; (3) current expenditures; (4) percentage distribution of current expenditures; (5) student membership and current expenditure per pupil; (6) current expenditures for instruction; and (7) total expenditures. Federal, State, and Local Governments: 2002 Public Elementary-Secondary Education Finance Data - These statistical tables contain data on education spending based on the 2002 Census of Governments. The tabulations present data on revenue, expenditure, debt and assets for all individual public elementary and secondary school systems. The data show that state governments contributed the greatest share of public elementary and secondary school funding -- $207.4 billion -- followed by local sources at $179.7 billion. The federal government was the third largest contributor at $32.7 billion. The District of Columbia spent the most in per-student expenditures followed by New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The lowest per-pupil spending amounts were in Utah, Mississippi, Arizona, Idaho and Tennessee. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004)...
