Recent violence in our schools over the past few years has captured the nation's attention. State policymakers have responded with dozens of measures aimed at cracking down on school violence, primarily in the form of stiffer penalties for students who assault or threaten others, bring weapons into schools or perpetrate bomb scares. But state leaders also are looking at a variety of measures focused on prevention and intervention.

This issue site provides research, statistics, programs and policies related to school safety and to the goal of ensuring that every school provides a safe, positive and stimulating environment for teaching and learning.
