Finance--Facilities

In the United States, approximately 49.8 million students—a number expected to rise to more than 53 million—spend their days in 98,800 public schools. To accommodate the expected population growth, reduce overcrowding and comply with class-size reduction mandates, ongoing expenses will be needed to build thousands of new schools across the country in the next few years.

The quality and condition of these existing and new facilities will have long-term consequences, affecting student learning and safety, operational expenses, the health and productivity of students and staff in addition to the ability of schools to retain quality teachers.

This Issue Site is dedicated to discussing the important issues in school facilities that policymakers will face, with sections devoted to What States Are Doing, Selected Research and Readings and Other Web Sites. For finance issues in particular, also see the ECS Issue Site Finance-Facilities.
