In the United States, approximately 49.4 million students—a number expected to rise to nearly 50 million by 2014—spend their days in 98,800 public schools. To accommodate the expected population growth, reduce overcrowding and comply with class-size reduction mandates, ongoing expenses will be needed to build thousands of new schools across the country in the next few years.

The quality and condition of these existing and new facilities will have long-term consequences, affecting student learning and safety, operational expenses, the health and productivity of students and staff in addition to the ability of schools to retain quality teachers.
