Over recent years, assessments at the state, national and international levels have been developed to gauge student achievement in the core subjects. The results of these assessments have revealed where students are achieving proficiency and where much work remains to be done. These test results also have brought about significant controversy, as they often expose differential levels of assessment performance between boys and girls, between urban/suburban/rural students, and particularly among various ethnic or racial groups. Researchers have tracked these achievement gaps over the decades and have proposed various causes for them, as well as potential solutions.

This Issue Site deals with various aspects of the measurement of student learning, including:

  • Statewide evaluations of student performance
  • National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and other interstate comparisons
  • International comparisons (for example, the Third International Mathematics and Science Study or TIMSS)
  • The minority achievement gap
  • The gender achievement gap.
The site provides information about state legislative efforts to accurately report student achievement, as well as research on the magnitude of the various student achievement gaps and on successful means of reducing them, when not eliminating them altogether.
