Back to Teaching Quality main page. With the growing shortage of teachers throughout the country, many states and districts have and continue to work towards attracting and keeping teachers in K-12 schools. This endeavor may come in the form of incentives which can be offered via:
Recruitment and retention of educators in at-risk/hard-to-staff schools (inner-city, rural, low-performing and high-poverty) and hard-to-staff subjects (math, science, computers and special education) is necessary in to order to increase student performance, provide quality education and help close the achievement gap. Incentives are offered to teachers and teacher candidates who agree to teach in these schools in return for multi-year commitments to remain in the school and in the teaching profession. Incentives are also provided to entice minorities to pursue teaching as a profession as well as to teach in lower performing schools.
