An educational technology infrastructure plan defines the technology-related capabilities a school will have. Infrastructure plans encompass curriculum objectives, district resources, student population, school building capacity and administrative functions. These issues have several components that can be approached at the classroom, building and district levels. Some questions that infrastructure planners must address include:

  • What types of network connections (capacity) should the school have?
  • What sort of wiring and cabling issues does the school building have?
  • How many computer workstations should there be per student, and what capabilities will each station have?
  • What types of technology will address our needs for the longest amount of time?
  • What tasks will we need the technology to perform?
  • What types of technology are useful for multiple tasks?
  • Will we be able to build upon the technology as our needs grow?
  • Can we establish a consistent technology format throughout the district and take advantage of possible group rates?
  • What are the administrative uses of this technology, and what is the hardware and software needed to support those uses?
Infrastructure planning also must address issues of security, funding continuity, software that aligns with curriculum, professional development, external and internal technical support, community financial support, and distance-learning capabilities.

This Sub-Issue Site provides methods and suggestions for planning an educational technology infrastructure. It includes state examples of technology plans, as well as resources and guidelines for additional assistance.
