In a performance-based accountability system, rewards are frequently used as incentives to teachers, schools, and districts to raise student achievement. Rewards can take the form of cash, public recognition, and/or increased freedom and flexibility from regulations. Rewards can be given to low-performing schools that have dramatically increased their achievement scores or to schools that reach high levels of student achievement. In some incentive systems, teachers receive cash awards.
This issue page provides information about the design, function, and application of rewards in a performance-based accountability system.
