Most states have policies that provide sanctions and/or assistance for low-performing schools. Typically, low-performing schools are at first placed on probation or a "watch" list. If they fail to improve over time, sanctions may be progressively increased — from requiring an improvement plan, to the provision of technical assistance, to reconstituting or even closing a school. In some cases, where a number of schools in a district are low-performing, states have provisions to take over an entire district. Sanctions for students may include not receiving a high school diploma or not being promoted to the next grade.
