Prayer, the Bible and the Public Schools

Today, many groups and individuals seek a place in the public school curriculum for prayer, Bible reading or posting of the Ten Commandments. Some people argue that the public school teaches the religion of "secular humanism" and that these materials are needed to balance the fare. Others argue that the public school system has become hostile to religion. This Issue page covers separation of church and state issues such as school prayer, moment-of-silence laws, posting of the Ten Commandments, religious curriculum, the teaching of evolution or creationism, and public support for religious institutions.

Guidance on Constitutionally Protected Prayer in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools
On February 7, 2003, Secretary Paige issued guidance on constitutionally protected prayer in public elementary and secondary schools. This guidance explains the responsibilities of state and local educational agencies with respect to this aspect of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. (U.S. Department of Education, 2003)
