WHO WE ARE
The Legislative Education Staff Network (LESN) is a joint initiative of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Education Commission of the States whose purpose is to encourage and promote interaction among legislative staff on critical public education issues, the laws governing such education and the policies and costs of public educational systems across the country. The LESN represents all legislative staff with responsibility for education policy, including legal, finance and budget policy. A Steering Committee, composed of eight LESN members, nominated by ECS and NCSL, oversees the activities of the Network. Legislative education staff who are not members of LESN may join at any time. Membership is free. Contact Emily Workman at eworkman@ecs.org or 303-299-3631 to inquire about membership. WHY WE EXIST
The purpose of LESN is to strengthen the capabilities of legislative education staff to support legislative institutions and individual legislators in developing state education laws and policies, both fiscal and programmatic, that support student success. WHAT WE DOParticipation in LESN allows opportunities for legislative staff to: network with other legislative staff and with other state, federal and local education professionals; obtain professional development and training; access information and research on targeted education policy issues; collaborate with education policy experts; provide technical assistance to other legislative staff on education initiatives; and, partner with other education stakeholders including business, nonprofit organizations and education associations. Each year members of the Network select one of their legislative education staff colleagues to be recognized for their dedication and hard work and present them the LESN Recognition Award. In an effort to keep the LESN members current on education research, ECS staff member Emily Workman pulls together a monthly newsletter of pertinent materials which may serve the legislative staff as they research in preparation of legislation. Heads Up on Education Issues is electronically distributed at the end of each month. Visit the Legislative Education Staff Network page on the National Conference of State Legislatures site. Most content is accessible only to LESN members. |
