State Information Request: Low Socio-Economic Status (archive)

A state department of education official inquired about which states use direct certification to determine low socio-economic status, examples of other possible ways of calculating low SES, and the pros and cons of those alternatives. Our response included information about alternative measures, advantages and disadvantages of free- and reduced-price lunch as a measure of SES, state examples and links to other resources. To provide timely assistance to our constituents, State Information Requests are typically completed in 24 hours. They reflect an issue scan versus a comprehensive analysis.
