Innovative Approaches to Statewide Assessments

Many teachers, parents and community groups highlight that statewide summative assessments serve a narrow snapshot of student knowledge. As states look for a more comprehensive picture of student achievement and the necessary supports for student success, there’s vast opportunity to advance summative assessments.
 
Three states — Alaska, Indiana and Massachusetts — offer helpful examples of reassessing assessments and launching innovative approaches to advance student learning and pathways. State leaders are finding unique ways to meet federal accountability requirements while meeting the needs of local schools, teachers and students.
