State Information Request: Four-Day School Weeks

A state department of education leader asked for information about four-day school weeks, including how many states allow the practice and what is done on what would have been the fifth day of the school week.

Our response provides state examples of policies that allow districts to operate four-day school weeks. Additionally, this response provides common reasons that districts may consider a four-day school week, pros and cons of implementing a four-day school week and information on what staff and students reportedly do on what would have been the fifth day of the school week. To provide timely assistance to our constituents, State Information Requests are typically completed in 48 hours. They reflect an issue scan versus a comprehensive analysis.
