The 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress results reflected the largest decline in fourth and eighth grade math scores in 30 years and may highlight ongoing opportunity gaps among historically underserved racial and socioeconomic student groups.  

As these declines cause concern for educators and policymakers across the country, this Policy Outline highlights recent impacts on math achievement and strategies states are using to respond.
